The achievement of HOME goals can be assisted substantially by analysis of existing data collected in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. A large body of measurements of the currents and stratification around Hawaii has been collected with instruments such as moored current meters, CTDs, and ADCPs. While none of this data was obtained with goals similar to HOME's in mind, the data can be exploited nonetheless to help achieve HOME goals. For example, CTD data can be analyzed for the presence of signatures of fine-scale mixing activity, with the results being stratified according to depth, isopycnal, proximity to topography or other environmental variables. This work would help achieve the goals of the HOME Survey program in determining the locations and ubiquity of regions where strong mixing activity appears to be common irrespective of energy source.
